Introduction to Nose Surgery

Rhinoplasty refers to the surgical alteration of the nose for aesthetic and/or functional reasons. Our New Jersey plastic surgeon, Jordan P. Farkas, MD, was trained by internationally acclaimed rhinoplasty surgeons in both primary rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty, and he possesses advanced expertise in the treatment of nasal obstruction from a variety of causes, including a deviated nasal septum, turbinate hypertrophy, chronic sinusitis, or collapse of the nasal valve due to previous rhinoplasty surgery. He uses the most effective and advanced techniques in order to help his patients achieve beautifully refined noses that look natural and breathe with ease.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure aimed at reshaping or resizing the nose to enhance facial harmony and improve nasal function. It can address aesthetic issues like a hump on the nose bridge, a drooping or upturned nasal tip, and nostril size. It can also be performed to correct breathing problems caused by a deviated septum or other nasal deformities.

Revision rhinoplasty is a secondary procedure designed to correct or improve the results of a previous rhinoplasty, addressing issues such as asymmetry, breathing difficulties, or dissatisfaction with the initial outcome.

Why Choose Dr. Farkas for Rhinoplasty

Both primary and revision rhinoplasty require advanced surgical skill and anatomical knowledge. In addition to his medical education, Dr. Farkas has pursued continuing education opportunities in the arena of facial plastic surgery and rhinoplasty, specifically, including attendance at the prestigious annual Dallas Rhinoplasty Symposium as both a guest and instructor. He has also published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and papers about rhinoplasty techniques and advancements.

Dr. Farkas works closely with each patient to create a fully customized rhinoplasty treatment plan that accounts for their unique concerns and anatomy, resulting in optimal functional and aesthetic outcomes. He possesses a finely honed sense of both nasal form and facial beauty, and he employs a precise blend of surgical finesse and artistry to help patients achieve results that look and feel natural.

Additionally, Dr. Farkas cares deeply about delivering informed, ethical care, and he performs a thorough screening on each patient in order to determine candidacy. He believes it is vital for patients to have reasonable expectations for what a rhinoplasty can achieve, and he works to ensure the unique beauty and character of the patient’s face is maintained. He believes that rhinoplasty should be about enhancing the overall harmony and balance of a patient’s appearance, not making them look like a different person.

What Can Rhinoplasty Treat?

Rhinoplasty can address a number of aesthetic and functional nasal concerns, including:

  • Nasal asymmetry
  • Humps or depressions on the nasal bridge
  • Wide or narrow nose width
  • Large, bulbous, or drooping nasal tip
  • Upturned nasal tip
  • Nostrils that are large, wide, or upturned
  • Crooked or off-center nose
  • Breathing difficulties due to structural issues, such as a deviated septum
  • Post-traumatic nasal deformities
  • Birth defects affecting nasal shape or function

What Does the Rhinoplasty Procedure Entail?

Dr. Farkas consults closely with each patient to develop a personalized rhinoplasty treatment plan. On the day of surgery, general anesthesia will be administered while Dr. Farkas operates.

Depending on the specifics of the treatment plan, Dr. Farkas will make incisions inside the nostrils (closed rhinoplasty) or at the base of the nose between the nostrils (open rhinoplasty). The skin is then lifted to access the bone and cartilage, which are reshaped to achieve the desired contour. Depending on the patient’s goals, Dr. Farkas may reduce or augment nasal structures using grafts from the septum or other body parts. Once the reshaping is complete, the skin is re-draped, and the incisions are closed.

What Can I Expect After Rhinoplasty?

Patients typically wear a nasal splint for at least the first week or two after surgery to support their new nasal shape. Most patients report being able to return to non-strenuous jobs within 1-2 weeks, although this may vary based on their individual comfort with their post-surgical bruising and swelling. Dr. Farkas notes that it is important to be patient when evaluating results, as residual swelling can persist for six months to a year after surgery, obfuscating the full effects of the rhinoplasty.

It is important to avoid strenuous activities for at least the first 4-6 weeks after treatment. Patients should also be mindful when blowing their nose or touching their face. Dr. Farkas will provide further guidance and information during the consultation process.
