What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at improving the appearance of the abdomen. It involves removing excess skin and fat, and tightening the abdominal muscles for a flatter, firmer aesthetic. The procedure can offer an effective solution for both men and women interested in enhancing their abdominal contours, and Dr. Farkas customizes each abdominoplasty with the unique cosmetic goals of the patient in mind.

Tummy tuck surgery can be highly effective for those seeking abdominal rejuvenation, enhancing confidence and quality of life. It is particularly popular amongst patients with loose or sagging skin due to significant weight loss or pregnancy. For those seeking more comprehensive rejuvenation, a mommy makeover or post-bariatric body contouring plan may be developed, both of which typically involve pairing a tummy tuck with additional procedures to address multiple body areas at once. Our Bergen County plastic surgeon, Dr. Jordan P. Farkas, customizes each tummy tuck to the unique anatomy and goals of the patient, ensuring the most natural-looking results.

What Does the Tummy Tuck Procedure Entail?

Tummy tuck surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. The process generally begins with a horizontal incision made between the hip bones, just above the pubic area. The length and shape of the incision depend on the amount of loose skin to be removed. In some cases, a second incision around the navel is necessary to address excess skin in the upper abdomen. Once the incision(s) are made, Dr. Farkas then repairs and tightens the abdominal muscles, pulls the remaining skin down, and removes any extra to create a firmer, flatter, and smoother stomach contour. The navel may be repositioned to a more natural-looking location, as needed.

Liposuction may also be incorporated as part of the tummy tuck treatment plan to address excess fat and enhance the contours of the sides and back. Dr. Farkas will discuss your goals and go over the different options with you ahead of time to ensure you know exactly what to expect from the procedure.

What Can I Expect During Tummy Tuck Recovery?

Immediately after surgery, patients will be instructed to wear a compression garment to minimize swelling, protect incisions, and support the healing abdomen. Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common, but most patients report that these symptoms can be effectively managed with adequate rest and prescribed medications. Most symptoms should gradually resolve over the course of the first two weeks.

Patients should plan to take at least one to two weeks off work and avoid strenuous activities for at least six weeks. Light walking is encouraged to promote circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots. It’s important to follow Dr. Farkas’s post-operative care instructions, which may include caring for drains placed to remove excess fluid. Full recovery and final results can take several months to appear as swelling resolves and the newly defined abdominal contours settle.

What Will My Tummy Tuck Scars Look Like?

Tummy tuck scars typically extend horizontally between the hips, just above the pubic area, and may include a smaller scar around the navel. Initially red and raised, scars gradually fade and flatten over time. Proper post-operative care, including keeping the area clean and moisturized, can aid healing and minimize scar appearance. Avoiding sun exposure and following your surgeon’s advice on scar treatment, such as using silicone sheets or gels, can also improve results. When placing incisions, Dr. Farkas does everything in his power to ensure they will be as discreet as possible. Although the final scar will be visible, most patients find that it can be easily concealed by underwear or swimwear.
