What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a versatile procedure that removes or recontours excess fat in specific areas of the body, such as the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, arms, and neck. It involves the use of small, thin tubes—called cannulas—to suction away excess fat while contouring and reshaping the remaining fat, providing a slimmer and more defined appearance. It is important to note that liposuction is not a weight-loss solution but a method to target and break-up stubborn fat deposits that don’t respond to diet and exercise. Dr. Jordan P. Farkas, our Bergen County plastic surgeon, uses liposuction to help patients achieve slimmer, smoother body contours for an enhanced physique.

Am I a Candidate for Liposuction?

Ideal candidates for liposuction are healthy adults who are at or near their ideal weight and have good skin elasticity. Candidates should also ideally be non-smokers and free from serious medical conditions that could impair healing. Realistic expectations about the results are essential, understanding that liposuction is for body contouring, not weight loss. Individuals with significant skin laxity or those seeking major weight reduction may require alternative procedures. During your consultation, Dr. Farkas will review your concerns and goals in order to determine whether or not liposuction is the most appropriate treatment option. In some cases, he may recommend additional or alternative procedures—such as a tummy tuck, thigh lift, or arm lift—to help you best achieve your desired results.

What Does the Liposuction Procedure Involve?

The liposuction procedure typically begins with the administration of anesthesia, either general or local with sedation, to ensure patient comfort. Dr. Farkas then makes small incisions near the treatment area(s) and inserts a thin tube called a cannula. Using a controlled back-and-forth motion, the cannula loosens excess fat, which is then suctioned out with a surgical vacuum or syringe.
The duration of the procedure varies based on the amount of fat being removed, the number of areas being treated, and whether any complementary procedures are being performed at the same time.

What Can I Expect From Recovery After Liposuction?

After liposuction, patients can expect to experience swelling and bruising around the treatment sites. Compression garments may be worn to support the newly sculpted contours and minimize swelling. Most patients can return to their regular routines within a week, though more vigorous and strenuous activities should be avoided for at least two to four weeks. Dr. Farkas can provide more personalized recommendations during the consultation process based on the specifics of the treatment plan.
